Four Letters yet so Powerful

Love!?
We hear the word used all the time and almost everywhere we go. We tell our boyfriend/ girlfriend we love them after we've been dating them for three months, we don't love them when they make us mad. We love our TV shows and our favorite foods and books. We are in love with movie stars and the roles they play, but what do we actually mean when we say "I love....?
Do we really comprehend the power of this four letter word? Where did this word that is so widely used today get its start? I shared on Wednesday that with the same breath we say that we love our friends and also that we love taco's or ice cream. What is it that has made us feel that we need to use this one word to express how much we feel about virtually everything.  Thinking back to your day today or this past week and how many times can you remember attributing the word love to something or someone.
Has love become just another word that we have lost the meaning and significance of it? Is it possible for us to love our friends and tacos or have we gone so far to corrupt the meaning of love and its original purpose.
Maybe love has several different meanings and connotations to it that allows us to use it so freely. Really what separates something between a "like" and a "love" for us because they seem to be used pretty interchangeably. It seems as though in our relationships we are pretty quick to say "I love you" and to express it. We are quick to find excuses for why it wasn't love when we break up or say that we don't love something when we feel hurt or betrayed, I have to ask the question again do we really comprehend what love is?

  1. I agree.

I don't feel very highly in a person's view if they "love" tacos, but also "love" me.
All love should be unconditional. I know that I have said that I "love" material objects, but I have meant it in a hyperbole, an exaggeration, or a figure of speech. I don't love material objects, really. I'm trying to change the way that I word what I'm going to say. When I say, "I love you." I'm going to really mean it.

Another great point: God is love.

We wouldn't have love without God.

God loves us, unconditionally, everlasting, and no matter what. Even though we are sinful beings, and we consistently disobey him, and disappoint him. He loves us. End of story. :D

We cannot hate and love at the same time. It says so in the bible.

I'm really excited about this topic in youth group. It's really fun and interesting, and something that needs to be discussed and covered. :D

  2. Since we had our first lesson on love, I've become a lot more aware of people saying it around me. It's interesting, now that I know about the three kinds of love, to observe how everyone else uses it. I see what you mean, Joel, about how it's said loosely and without thought a lot of the time. I've been trying not to use it anymore in the context of food or books or clothes. I'm doing my best to say "like" instead, but it can be challenging. I've never realized before how much I say the word love in my daily life. -_-

Another word I realized I use a lot usually is hate. "I hate these shoes" or "I hate school lunches". It's funny, because I don't actually HATE those things. It's an exaggeration, like Kristen said.
Hate is a strong word, like love.

From now on when I say love I'm going to really mean it. I've always meant it when I said it to people, but the significance of it was probably lessened by the fact that I also said it about tacos. :)

I really enjoy this topic too. It's one of those things you can think deeply about and debate. Nice choice! :O
